Carole, The PDF wasn't created with an option to make text selectable, which is the case with most modern scanning software that offers PDF as an output choice. So the only way of getting at the text would be using an OCR product that supports PDF as an input format. I don't know of any other than possibly PDF2Office. The Personal edition for OS X is $59 - http://www.recosoft.com/products/index.htm I would check that it does work for a specimen before buying.
