Sorry I missed this question about PDFs, as I am preparing a lecture on how to 
deal with PDF files! I use Acrobat Standard for the conversion, unless it is an 
image, in which case I use ABBYY Fine Reader. PDFs can be a real pain to 
convert. I also use Acrobat for galley proof and revision with comments (and 
there are people who think translators have a good life).

There is an inexpensive solution for Mac users - there are plenty for Windows:

You can try 1 page for free, more than that, it costs US$30, which I think is a 
very good price. I found this software on the Apple downloads microsite, while 
looking for a converter as good as Versaverter - which now has a snazzy Mac 
version. Excellent converter, BYW.

Just a wee joke: In Brazil, we call a PDF an FDP, an acronym for "son of 
a....." (please fill the rest).
