And of course there are many HiFi folk who think that CD/AIFF is rubbish and that Vinyl is The Only One True Way(tm). :-) I had an issue of HiFi News and Record Review where Ivor Tiefenbrun, the founder of Linn Products, memorably said that "The only emotion one experiences when listening to Beethoven on a CD is irritation".

and he's right (as someone who used to share a flat with someone who said "If I had not bought my stereo, I could have a second home). But this is the hierarchy:

1) perfect acoustic live performance
2) poor acoustic live performance
3) lossless format (eg aiff)
4) high quality lossy format (eg AAC)
5) moderate to poor quality format (MP3)

when you are going down from 3, why drop to 5?

if you can't tell the difference between MP3 and AAC on good equipment, same original file, you're not listening carefully enough:-)
