You could (after backing up!!!!) 

(back up again to a separate disk)

(promise you backed up?)

ok, disable the account in Prefs, then create a new one with same details. Tell 
it to leave stuff on the server. See if the smtp works. Then you can either 
re-enable the old account and drag everything to the new one, recreating 
hierarchy if necessary (only if it's pop) or exclude the new one from checking 
and choose the new 'working' smtp server for the old account, after re-enabling 
it. Capiche?


You don't say whether it's imap or pop, which makes a big difference. If it's 
imap, it should all be sitting there on the server when you create the new 
version of the account.
