Unfortunately skype is where I first noticed the internal mic wasn't working after having used audacity.

Hi Jonathan.

I've gpt Audacity on my iMac and the mike works fine - I use it when I'm using Skype and there doesn't seem to be any problem - yet!

Thanks gentlemen.
I think I will have to do a bit more investigating but I hope I'm not going to regret using Audacity. Does this mean that, potentially, I may never be able to use the internal mic for the rest of the imac's life? That would be a real arseache!

It's not the same thing, but I did have an odd audio issue with Audacity a few years ago on my old iMac (with OS 10.2!). I had set something in the Audacity preferences that meant that all the audio that came into the iMac was somehow mixed to the output (via the built-in speakers) at all times. From then on everything that I recorded on the iMac - even on other packages - sounded like I was recording in a bathroom!

I know what happened - somehow Audacity output the direct input sound together with a delayed "digitised" sound at the same time - but I did not know HOW it happened - or how to reverse it. It remained a problem until the day the iMac died!

I just think that Audacity is a bit dangerous on Macs!

I've always found Audacity a bit screwy -- if powerful. I often use iMovie to record audio now instead. but you may have set something in Audacity to zero, so it makes the system match?

I downloaded an application called Audacity which I have used perfectly well on my Macbook pro. However, since putting it on my imac, my internal mic is not picking up any levels. I have tried resetting it in preferences but to no avail. I noticed by chance however, that when I run Audacity on the imac it automatically sends the input volume in system preferences/sound to zero level. Does anyone know whether this is something easily fixable or whether removing the Audacity application will sort it?
