Just a comment on the second point: partitioning on the fly. Drive Genius (prosoft engineering) is a very good disk utility, and it has always included changing partitions on the fly and without erasing/reformatting. Prosoft make data rescue, recommended by sam for data recovery! There's a new version (3) just out.
