Ranulph is spot on there Disc utility will do it all. If I was to start with a 
nice clean drive i would also use disk utility to make 2 partitions one large 
and a small one which would be bootable and install a system on it. As well as 
being able to boot from this in an emergency, it will allow you to carry out 
better maintenance on the internal main system. This assumes that the drive is 
bootable which almost all are these days, Disk utility will tell you.
