Is this linked to the gmail thing about archive-not-delete? The iPhone seems to 
honour the difference (archive instead of trash). You'll probably find that if 
the account is set to archive then the delete button has the same function. 

Which makes me think- how come google wants you never to delete anything? They 
want to know you better than you do....
