I realised eventually that there was a confusion between 500/itunes Media/ and 500 as root. I think I've now found everything after pointing iTunes at the various locations (um, I'd better take back what I said;-))

That confusion occurred when I reset the library location to the wrong folder ages ago, and it consolidated them (or something).

But I did discover you can't import the xml into an existing library (I thought I had done this but perhaps I didn't without creating a new library file, which gives you its own problems)

moral of the story backup backup backup backup backup. Anyone who doesn't have a back-up of their iTunes stuff, it's only a matter of time...go buy an external disk...
