You will need the helpdesk to sort out access unless you have eduroam
from another institution (in which case it would have worked already).
My university used to spit at you (metaphorically, I assure you) if you
said you were using a Mac. Nowadays they don't really mind; they say
they don't technically support them, but usually do. This might have
something to do with the fact that most of the staff in IS use macs
whenever they get the chance... So I would ask them.
