Hi Tilly

To solve the loop :

Delete the folder : Macintosh HD > Library > Preferences > System Configuration

Reboot

Open System Prefs and click on Network

Set the "Show" menu to "Built in Ethernet"

Type anything into the dns box then delete whatever you typed

Click Apply

Rejoin the network and see if that works.

Essentially you're deleting corrupted system networking prefs, then recreating 
them using System Prefs.
