I understand. As far as I'm aware there is no way of setting a default location 
when you open the Maps app. The best you can do is use the 'bookmarks' feature, 
the book icon in the search bar, select either a bookmark for your home 
location, or select your home contacts entry from the contacts listing.

I'm not sure of the relevance to your problem but in this Apple Support post 
there are problems with Location Services for the iPod Touch;
