I don't have an iPhone or an iPad, though I do have a previous issue iPod touch. I close the lid of my unibody (I don't have any other machine on at the moment). I come back, open it, and find there are some new messages that weren't there when I closed the lid. The light in the Apple logo goes out, is how I know (as opposed to think) the machine is off.
All very strange! And quite nice, in a funny way. BUT the main point I wanted to make is that the machine's going out and scavenging for mail even though the preferences are set for manual.
