If it's IDE, chances are the memory and processor are quite slow too. It would cost more for a decent SSD drive than a new laptop, including faster dual core processor, ram and HD, which cumulatively would be faster than a SSD.
Currys are doing an HP laptop for £376 at the moment, 500gb drive and windows 7. It may only be a dual core pentium but it's faster than an old laptop.
