If she's a complete newbie to computers in general i.e. not been
spoiled by windows yet, you could try putting ubuntu on there.  The
latest versions are quite mac like, and you can try it from USB
without modifying the hard disk.  With windows vista there are only
two sensible choices, downgrade it to XP or upgrade it to windows 7.
