Thank you for your interest, Keith... I found a couple of websites through Google which gave these links and tried them. However, the same thing happened.
What I did find though, was some information through Google that solved the problem: Apparently, Stuffit (the programme that un-stuffs .sit files) has a bug in it where the contents of an un-stuffed folder are not displayed. The cure was to create an empty folder in the apparently empty folder, as it were, and - thankfully - the mysteriously absent files appeared! I have been able to succesfully instally Nikon Scan 4 as a result. As no-one had replied before now to my original quiery, I did not have anything in Google Mail to mention this.
