HI Sam - I haven't tried a PRAM reset, because I've had the following advice 
from Alsoft -

They want me to Install DiskWarrior into
my external drive's "Utilities" folder, (which is inside the "Applications"
folder) and run DiskWarrior from there.

So - (and this has been a steep learning curve) I have already partitioned my 
external drive using the Guid partition scheme, and have installed Snow Leopard 
on it. That all works fine. However, I cannot find the applications folder 
(although can see Utilities).

It's probably really obvious...
