Hi Sam - I'm pretty sure I have worked out what I need to do. It just won't do
it with Disk Warrior because those files are greyed out. But I've tried it with
a couple of other applications and everything's fine. So I'm going to give up
on DW for now, and may pay for their upgrade in the future.

In the meantime, thank you for all the help about installing OSX onto an
external drive. It's been really helpful and I now feel quite confident
starting up my mac from that drive :-)

Best wishes
Catherine
