I downloaded MacX DVD Ripper Pro (who dreams up the names of these things?) which was being offered free a while and it worked a treat and I could watch the result just fine on my iPad ... but it was S-L-O-W and I wondered how much I *really* wanted to watch that DVD on the go. I felt it would take longer to rip and convert than to watch it. I do have a Core Duo iMac though so perhaps these applications need more up to date hardware to be practical.

it's a CPU thing. My Mac Pro does it a lot quicker than my MBP did, and so on. Even then it's annoying (about a third of the playback time, or a quarter, or so).

Elgato make a hardware accelerator but it's not much quicker than your iMac, I think. It does free up the CPU though. It's a little USB stick. But it won't rip from 'bought DVDs' so you have to rip it first.
