This is probably a rumour started by the people who "Didn't buy the iPad because they were waiting for the iPad 2" and then they heard that as the iPad 2 had no Retina display that it must be coming in iPad 3. Or some other wishlist feature fantasy. They are still waiting to buy ...
I doubt if Apple is feeling any particular pressure given the alternatives to an iPad which don't seem to be flying off the shelves in any numbers. Rumours are rumours. Some are plausible. Some are just crazy. And it's hard to tell which is which. In terms of using the iPad as a phone, to my knowledge there's nothing a 3G iPad 2 can do that a 3G iPad can't as it's not added any new features in that area. I went into the Apple store yesterday to play around with the iPad 2 and I thought it was just like my iPad only better to hold, lighter and a bit faster but didn't feel dramatically so but then I wasn't playing any CPU hungry games. But I felt that the reduction in size and weight made the entire device feel very 'elegant' indeed- not a word I'd apply to my iPad.
