On the subject of iPad alternatives, Samsung decided to pull their Galaxy Tab after the iPad2 was announced. It later re-emerged with higher specs, a thinner enclosure, no working prototype and an apparently fictitious marketing strategy : http://technologizer.com/2011/03/25/is-samsungs-new-galaxy-tab-fibbing-about-its-figure-and-about-those-galaxy-tab-fans/
The rumours have suggested Apple's working on a 'game changer' iPad ready for release at the end of the year, with the update to the first iPad being released now to keep other companies on their toes. I personally don't use my iPad enough to justify the expenditure replacing it. I've had no problems with speed or weight, although my girlfriend won't read eBooks on it because the aluminium back makes her hand cold.
