Personally, I think an iPad would be a marvellous solution, but this is what 
his daughter said:

Re a computer ..... they are very, very resistant to change/anything 
newfangled, I should warn you. 

The reason for getting him a laptop is that, following a stay in hospital, he 
can no longer go upstairs to his current computer (which, anyway, is described 
by his daughter as "unbelievably awful and ancient").

Still, the more I think about it, the more an iPad seems the obvious answer. 
Excuse my ignorance, but what would one need in the way of a modem or anything 
else to make it able to go on the internet?
