hI Mark Is the drive able to see other DVDs? Perhaps the laser needs cleaning with the micro-fibre cloth round a credit card trick?
You could use an external drive to install from. Just use Disk Utility to restore from the DVD to an external drive then hold alt at startup to choose the external drive.
