I recall reading something recently about Parallels 6, the latest OSX security update, and high CPU usage. Might be worth checking the Parallels forums as it could be a known issue. Can't remember the details but I think the fix was just to delete a preference file or something.

Thanks guys. I started noticing yesterday when I was running XP under
Parallels, then again later on when watching a film using VLC. I've
tried the battery out-power switch down thing and (that's what I
remember doing before) and will report back. I wonder if it's anything
to do with the updates I installed day before yesterday?

I'd also suggest having a look inside IF you know what you're doing. I had a
Macbook do this and it turned out it was choked with dust.

But only if you don't mind risking it;)

It's probably linked to high CPU. Runing anything intensive (like Flash?)
Just leaving the Guardian homepage open can ramp CPU up to 97%...
