I personally recommend sticking to Snow Leopard. I did a clean install, and all my MobileMe contacts have disappeared, both on the system and the MobileMe servers. I am chatting to an Apple representative on the internet at the moment but I don't think he's going to be able to help me much.
Make a backup of your contacts at least! Grrr!
