Hi Steve My first advice would be to upgrade to Snow Leopard if possible, Mail is much improved in 10.6+
If you can't upgrade, click the ! icon and it'll give you the reason why Mail is unable to make a connection. Try turning SSL off (if it's on) for that account and see if that makes a difference. Btinternet's servers are usually quite unstable I find.
