Thanks, Sam. Peculiar thing is that when I went to Sys Pref to set up account again as you suggested, a different page appeared asking me to sign into Mobile Me, which I did and then followed instructions on moving to iCloud. All set up and working now. Don't know why the MM box didnt turn up before. Maybe network as you say.
