Hi Ranulph Just drag the iPhoto library from your internal to external drive (home folder / Pictures / iPhoto Library) then hold alt when launching iPhoto, it'll scan and present you with a list of found iPhoto Libraries, choose the one on your external drive and it'll open as normal.
You'll need to make sure that a) it's not on the Time Machine backup disk and b) the external drive isn't in the list of Time Machine exclusions in System Preferences / Time Machine.
