A strategy I use is to have a cloned backup of my machine on an external disc, 
quite separate from any time machine backup. I can then start up from this 
external disc on any machine that will run the OS I'm running.

It's simple, and it has saved me on several occasions.

When the other machine is back from hospital, I erase the disc and do a full 
back up from my external disc.
