I had thought that too but then was a bit confused:

If I click on the AirPort Extreme in the resulting box it has a heading 
"wireless clients" and next to and below that it lists two MAC addresses one of 
which is my iMac and the other is that of my iPad - so neither is the Airport 
Extreme itself. There are also two addresses next to the Express - one is <name 
of my iPod>.local and the other I don't recognise.

If neither of the MAC addresses against the Extreme is its own MAC address can 
I assume that the non-iPod address adjacent to the Express is actually its MAC 
address?
