After a week of using iOS 7 I feel very positive about the new OS. I regard it
as new rather than just a mere incremental advance for the software. It
probably isn't to the taste of quite a few users but for me it has encouraged
me to use features, previously available in iOS 6, that I have just ignored or
have been ignorant of their availability, Notifications in particular but also
Newsstand.

For me I’ve found that a background image that is dominantly blue works well on
my iPad 2, obtaining clear definition of folder icons whereas it seems less
successful on the iPhone 4S, on which I have chosen a background image which is
dominantly green. Definitely worth spending a bit of time finding the right
background that suits ones eyes. I haven’t got bored with the parallax effect
as yet. Jury is out on the zooming of apps opening and switching - I think this
will become more irritating with time.

Both iPad and iPhone have been remarkably stable so far. My impression is that
the iPad 2 is now more responsive than before, the iPhone 4S doesn’t seem to
have slowed down. Safari does seems more speedy in rendering pages. Mail seems
to connect to the IMAP server more speedily. Auto downloading of app updates is
a great plus for saving one’s time - I found my original iPad waiting to
download more than 25 app updates on return from a week away, which takes
forever and sometimes requires a bit of encouragement to keep the downloading
going.

The Find Friends app design now seems archaic! The iWork's apps can do with a
UI work over, which I hope is coming soon along with greater compatibility with
the Mac versions - full table handling would be very welcome. Most other apps
that I regular use seem just fine, particularly Mail, Safari, Calendar,
Messages, and Photos. iPhoto and many of the 3rd party image handling apps that
I prefer could do with a makeover - haven’t explored iMovie as yet.

Given the legal problems that Apple has had with FaceTime routing I’m surprised
that it seems to work well. A big plus is FaceTime Audio - Apple once more
nibbling away at mobile carriers revenue streams. Audio seems well worth making
use - surprising how many people in my Contacts have FaceTime showing as active
- as calls seem very clear compared to those via mobile carriers voice call
network (Must check on how FaceTime Audio class are handled in conjunction with
Do Not Disturb).

I see iOS 7 as a work in progress that will develop considerably. Looking
forward to getting a 5S to see how it makes use of the most recent hardware.
Come on October!

Regards,

Tony
