I've discovered the difference between the disk and the volume in Disk Utility. I now have a volume that is Mac OS formatted - should I still repartition the disk? It's brand new so no data issues. Must admit I'm intimidated by the jargon: the partition at the moment is Master Boot Record. The options are:Mac OS extended, Mac OS extended (journaled), MS-DOS (FAT), EX FAT, and Free Space. Can't see HFS+ anywhere. Just want to get it right at the start! Thanks so much for the help and expertise - I'm relieved I don't have to return it as might not have time today. Tilly
