If it is that your backup is interrupted by the disk drive not being available then you should check the Energy Saver System preferences and uncheck ‘Put hard disks to sleep when possible’ if it is checked. I discovered this with my Seagate drive and understand it can also apply to WD drives as well. Once I’d unchecked the preference Time Machine has been behaving itself.
