Cheers Tony - it was a series of problems. A first installation and backup went
o.k., although slowly. (I didn't know what true slowness was at this point....)
I then received a message when automated backups took place saying there was a
conflict between Time Machine Editor and Time Machine. I looked up TM editor
and discovered that it was an App, but I don't have this App. The next message
told me that the WD drive had carried out an audit and I needed to start a new
backup. Time machine then stuck for several hours, with the message "Preparing
backup". Eventually I unchecked Time Machine "ON" and instructed a backup
"now". It's been backing up for 6 days now......

Phil
