Just to keep this thread updated for anyone who comes across it ...
The migration from my Mac Pro to the new MacBook Pro worked almost
perfectly. I used the latest Time Machine backup disk, extracted it from
the Mac Pro, loaded it into USB3 StarTech external dock. The Apple
Migration process on the new MacBook Pro spotted it on start up. The
whole process (moving around 350Gb data and apps) was done in around 1.5
hours. Then a bit of authorise and deauthorise in iTunes and the whole
process was just about done.
About an hour later, after some checks and tests, I realised that none
of my Parallels virtual machines were there. And that's because they
were not on the TM backup! So, I pulled those in from a clone of the Mac
Pro hard drive via the USB external dock and the job was done. I can
highly recommend a USB3 StarTech external dock. Its great for using all
those old internal drives laying around, repurposing them as backups.
The new MacBook Pro is amazingly fast and so quiet. In fact, the whole
home office is now incredibly quiet. We've gone from a old Mac Pro with
2x 1Tb drives inside and an old 20" Intel iMac - to laptops (MacBook Pro
and MacBook Air) attached to 27" and 23" screens. Both screens have a
Backpack shelf on the back of the screen stand. One Backpack shelf holds
a 1Tb portable USB3 TM drive, and the other a 1Tb drive and the MacBook
Air. I use my MacBook Pro as a second screen.
Aside from the occasional TM backup murmuring in the background now and
again, there are no hard drives running most of the time. And no fans
either (unless I start up a couple of Windows VMs!). None of the old kit
was really that noisy, but I've never known the office be so quiet as it
is now and you can literally hear a pin drop. Its quite eerie - as if
nothing's working!
Thanks for the advice. Hope my info helps someone, sometime ... Graham

I have an old Mac Pro (one of the first Intel ones, running OSX Lion)
and I'm about to migrate to a new MacBook Pro with 1Tb flash storage
and 16Gb RAM.
The Mac Pro has Ethernet and Firewire 400 (and USB2) connections.
The MacBook Pro has Thunderbolt and USB3.
The MBP can be be connected to a Thunderbolt display so it therefore
has Ethernet and Firewire 800 available.
I also have a StarTech USB3 external dock and could put the SATA drive
holding the TM drive from the Mac Pro in it.
And I also have a Thunderbolt to Firewire connector (and a FW 400/800
adaptor).
Given all the above, what's my best choice to connect the machines for
migrating the Mac Pro content/apps to the MacBook Pro?
Thanks, Graham
