You shouldn't need to use the memory stick at all, Steve. At least, I didn't with my iMac with 1TB HD.
I think what could be happening is that you're trying to install the entire OS on the memory stick, and there isn't enough room. I think all you need to do is to run the Yosemite installer on your fusion drive.
