Thank you very much, everyone who replied with advice about upgrading to iOS9. I am encouraged to go for it!
Meanwhile, I asked my friend (a PC user with an iPad) to remind me why she advised against upgrading to OS9, and this is what she said: I hit a 'known' problem with iOS9 upgrade...it may well be fixed by now as it was hitting a lot of people. You get near to the end of the upgrade and then see 'swipe to upgrade' on the iPad....but nothing happens...the iPad is effectively 'dead'. The way round it was to restore from a previous backup.....this doesn't back out the upgrade but seems to resolve the glitch. It was very tricky. I learnt a thing or two, I can tell you...not least was to check that there hadn't been a sneaky new release of the OS two days before I try an upgrade! Silly me....after avoiding an upgrade for 12 months, I take a very new release by mistake! Thanks again, everyone!
