Are you able to reboot it holding the command key (cmd) and R on the keyboard?
Does it boot to the recovery partition?
If not, either your Mac is on OS X 10.6 or earlier and will need to be
reinstalled from a 10.6 disc. Or your Mac probably has a faulty hard drive and
can't load the data to boot the computer and reinstall OS X.
If it does boot to the recovery partition, select to reinstall a copy of OS X
and see if that helps.
If you need to replace the hard drive, best to go for a solid state drive as
they're much faster than regular drives.

I am mostly housebound having a fairly full-time `caring` function, i.e.:- I
see no way of carrying it along to Churchill Square, my own mature age and
health issues also being a deciding factor.
