Thank you Sam and Graham for the help and advice. I downloaded the Malwarebytes Anti-Malware.app and it didn't find anything. The website for Malwarebytes - https://www.malwarebytes.com - is excellent by the way, containing plenty of reassuring information.
Sadly I have been unable to find the rogue site again because in my initial panic I wiped my Safari history. I'm a bit reluctant to search for it.
