Just a short note on my experiences of running MacOS Sierra on a non-eligible
system;

but with a 500GB SSD instead of a hard drive.

To enable Sierra to be installed I used the macOS Sierra Patcher Tool for
Unsupported Macs from http://dosdude1.com/sierrapatch.html
<http://dosdude1.com/sierrapatch.html> which covers all the constraints
concerning which non-eligible systems can be updated and the key issues, wifi
and trackpad for certain models, but more on this in a mo.

After making a bootable backup of the El Capitan system I updated from I just
followed the instructions supplied with the Patcher Tool. The actual instal
went quite slowly, about 3 hours, but without any issues. The system started
under Sierra without a hitch, but not without residual issues.

Performance? I’m impressed that Sierra runs somewhat better than either
Yosemite or El Capitan. Power up to User Desktop takes 20-25 seconds. Launch
times for apps are slightly quicker, even for my ancient copy of MS Office 2008
which seems to work without issue.

Two things that are not available are Handoff and Universal Copy/Paste -
neither of which impacts me greatly. No problems with the keyboard or trackpad.
Printing, including wireless printing, seems fine. WiFi unaffected, in fact now
seem to have a stronger signal than previously.

What doesn’t work is the iSight camera. It shows up as an USB device in the
system report but isn’t recognised as a video device by apps. Even with
eligible Macs the built-in camera may have issues under Sierra, something under
investigation I believe.

The MacBook Pro wasn’t borked by Sierra. I gave it a shot as I mostly use an
iPad for all the things I do, and I do have an eligible Mac mini which also
doesn’t seem to support Handover and Universal Copy/Paste.

As you can see from the system summary image I’ve managed to update Sierra to
10.12.1 without issues.
