LOS ANGELES (Zap2it.com) - Ever since "21 Jump Street" left the network in
1990, FOX has struggled to find a hip new show to fill the same niche of
attractive cops going undercover as high school students. OK, actually FOX
has given little effort to finding a replacement for the Johnny Depp drama
that represented one of the network's first hits, but that may be about to
change. FOX has given a put pilot commitment to a new drama from "K-19: The
Widowmaker" director Kathryn Bigelow that seems to have similar undercover
themes.
Based on an article by Mark Boal that ran in Playboy, the untitled drama
focuses on a female cop who goes undercover in a small town high school.
Glenn and Todd Kessler ("The Sopranos") are penning the pilot, which will be
produced by Imagine TV.
Brian Grazer and David Nevins from Imagine will executive produce along with
Todd Kessler and Bigelow. Boal will serve as a consultant.
Bigelow will also direct. The helmer of stylish action films including
"After Dark," "Point Break" and "Strange Days," Bigelow's television credits
include "Homicide: Life on the Street" and the miniseries "Wild Palms."
"I think what was interesting about the research that Mark Boal did is it
gave you a really unique woman in an extraordinary position as well as it
gave you a little slice of all-American high school life," Nevins tells The
Hollywood Reporter. "The way that Kathryn and the Kesslers are tackling it
is [what] I think would be the best combination of satisfying weekly
episodes with a really interesting long-term story."
