Pics of the naked please ;)

It sounds like something in the laptop is not configured correctly.  We have ruled out a problem with the router and the router set up.  Because it wouldn't work on the desktop if it were in the setup of the router.

We have ruled out a problem solely with the wireless connection.

That leaves something misconfigured in the laptop's network connection.  You might attempt running Windows XP's network connection wizard.  It can't hurt to try to make a new connection using that wizard.  It may install a missing component, or enable a network bridge.

Oh...also..
Try connecting the laptop directly to the router via a cable (directly to the Ethernet port in the laptop) instead of using the wireless.  If it works like you expect it to then, you have narrowed your problem to your network settings for the wireless card in your notebook.

Everything is correct that you said...Desktop and laptop are hooked up to router.  Desktop is in main port and it connects fine.....Laptop No..
I can't sign on to AOL with my laptop but it tells me in my network connections I have a strong connection.

Ok...just so I'm following you.

Desktop is hooked to the router, the router is hooked to the cable modem (or DSL modem).

The desktop can access the internet fine, through AOL.

Right?

Laptop can't access the network?  Or can't access the internet?  Or both?  (the network would be the LAN, or all machines hooked to the router<which would be just the laptop and the desktop in your case>)

Also, one thing to keep in mind...I've had more than one report of bad linksys routers.  I had one, took it back, got a replacement, couldn't get it to work, and picked up a D-Link and it worked perfect (using Bellsouth, not AOL).  Your router could just be bad.  I'm *not* a fan of Linksys.

My wireless router is a Belkins.

Here is a good site to answer a whole lot of questions even if you don't have a linksys, it will still provide a lot of info.

Are you using dialup or fast access (broadband)?  Because configuring a router with dialup is theoretically possible, but difficult to get working correctly.

There aren't a lot of significant changes yet, it's a lot of little things.  Some of them have been reported on in the media, like Jen was talking about the other day.  The spyware removal tool sucks, and the broadband router manager is best when disabled for example.

I've been doing it since 1993.  I applied to be a tester because at that time I had the bottom of the barrel equipment, and they needed to know the least sophisticated machines that the new software would run on.  I did it for Compuserve when they first started allowing public users on the system.

Now they give me advance notice of each new release and I test it and use it like anyone else would, I just  have to submit regular reports on how it performs and any problems I encounter.  I'm testing what will become AOL 10 right now.

It's fun, but when you beta test you can count on reformatting your machine very often because beta and alpha (which is pre-beta) software is destructive because of bugs.
