Crystals resonant in two different modes:- "Series resonant" and "Parallel
Resonant". Which mode is used is dependant on the type of resonance a
particular crystal is cut for and the circuit it is placed in. A crystal cut
for series resonance at 40 MHz may well have a parallel resonance quite some
degree different and visa versa.
My guess is that most radio manufacturers design circuits that use the same
mode of xtal resonance. Personally I am enormously surprised that the radio
manufacturers haven't started to use frequency synthesizers like most all
communications transceivers do these days. Perhaps Karlton may care to
comment ??
