Qualcomm said it awarded the venture financing to MightyText as the top prize in the North American Regional Semi-Finals of its 2012 QPrize venture investment competition. MightyText now goes on to compete with Qualcomm's other regional winners for $1M in funding. http://www.socaltech.com/intelligence/index.php?action=showdeal&id=44981 FreeConferenceCall.com Expands To Brazil ---- Long Beach-based free conference calling services provider FreeConferenceCall.com is expanding further internationally, saying this week that its services are now available in Brazil. The new service gives users in Brazil free conference calling, including international conferencing with other countries in its network. FreeConferenceCall.com says it now has 26 countries included in its service. MaxLinear Wins European TV Manufacturer ---- Carlsbad-based RF integrated circuit developer MaxLinear reported a win in Europe today, with European TV manufacturer Vestel Elektronik. MaxLinear said that Vesel will use one of its chips for its latest generation of hybrid televisions, targeted at the European LED and LCD television market. Financial impact of the deal and anticipated shipment volumes were not announced. Vestel is using MaxLinear's ML601 radio chip, used for analog front-ends. Elevation Pharmaceuticals Acquired For $430M ---- San Diego-based Elevation Pharmaceuticals, the venture backed developer of treatment for patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), has been acquired by Masachussets-based Sunovion Pharmaceuticals, in a deal worth up to $430M. The two said that Sunovion will pay $100M upfront, plus development milestone payments of up to $90M, and, upon regulatory approval, another $210M, along with $30M in milestones based on additional new programs. Elevation Pharmaceuticals' lead product is a bronchodilator currently in Phase 2b clinical trials. Elevation pharmaceuticals raised $30M in a Series B in January, and has raised a total of $47M. Recmnd.us Takes On Service Recommendations ---- The team behind Recmnd.Me, the hiring and recommendations website, is applying its technology to recommending software tools, apps, and companies through a new service, Recmnd.us. The Newport Beach company--headed by Navid Nobakht, the former CTO of Buy.com--said the service is aimed at creating a free, crowdsourced search engine which users can edit to help others find the best business tools, apps or companies for whatever they need done. The company described its service as "Digg meets Yelp, but for service providers, not restaurants." The site currently lists recommendations on tools for things such as A/B testing, project management, usability tools, surveys, and more. Virgin Dangles Suborbital Space Flight To Frequent Flyers ---- Virgin America, the airline firm run by Sir Richard Branson, has dangled a new reward for its frequent flyers: a trip into space on Virgin Galactic, the suborbital space firm developing vehicles out in Mojave. According to the rules of a contest launched by Virgin America, Virgin will reward the person to earn the most number of status points in the next year on its frequent flyer program, Elevate, with a Virgin Galactic suborbital space flight. The contest runs through August 7th, and counts points earned across all of Virgin's airlines, including Virgin America, Virgin Atlantic, and Virgin Australia. An added benefit: the reward does not requiring cashing in those points, and is not the number of total reward points a passenger has left at the end of the contest, but only how many earned by members. The second prize winner gets a ZERO-G weightless flight experience. Although Virgin Galactic has yet to launch its flights, it's been working on getting full approval for its commercial flights. The flight is worth $200,000, plus Virgin said it is chipping in an additional $85,700 in cash to cover taxes on the flight to suborbital space. Mefeedia.com Adds New Partners ---- Online social video discovery site Mefeedia said Thursday that it has added two new partners providing content to the site, MovieClips, and AnyClip. Mefeedia did not announce any details of the partnership, but did say the deal will provide it access to those firms' collection of clips from popular movies. Mefeedia's site lets user figure out what videos are popular with people, based on social networking activity; the firm also offers up a platform aimed at video producers, TV networks, and other content providers to deliver video applications for iPhone, iPad, Android Phones, Android Tablets, and Kindle Fire. Mefeedia is headed by Frank Sinton. Pokki Updates Desktop App Software ---- Pokki, the desktop app software developed by San Diego-based Sweetlabs, the startup headed by former DivX exec Darrius Thompson, is launching a big update to the software yesterday, saying that it now has over 1 million monthly active users of the software. The release launches the company out of beta. Updates to the software include a new notification center, ways to better manage and organize apps, as well as ways to discover new apps which run in the Pokki environment. Pokki is hoping to bring the app experience which people have become so used to on smartphones to Windows PCs, saying that the "PC is desperately in need of a makeover." Amazon Santa Monica Shindig Likely To Revolve Around New Kindle Fire, Touch ---- The big announcement party that e-commerce giant Amazon.com has set for Santa Monica airport's Barker Hanger looks to be all about the Amazon Kindle Fire, and Amazon Kindle Touch, as the firm bragged Thursday morning that it had "sold out" of its Kindle Fire. Kindle Fire is Amazon's tablet PC, which is based on Android. Amazon--which has been heavily promoting its press event on September 5th to tech press--started listing the Kindle Touch as out of stock Monday, and the Kindle Fire today, a very, very strong hint that those two devices will be seeing an update announced at the event. Amazon has traditionally put its popular products on shipment hold, saying that they are "sold out", before announcing updates to those products. The press event is unusual, in that Amazon has traditionally held them in New York, the center of the publishing industry; the shift to Santa Monica has been suggested to be a link to efforts to link Hollywood and the entertainment industry--centered in Los Angeles--with Amazon's new product line. Fliptu Bolsters Artists, Celebrities ---- Los Angeles-based Fliptu, the social media promotion startup headed by Jeremy Gocke, says it has started to line up a significant number of artists, bands, celebrities, and lifestyle brands for its service Thursday. The service--which is still in beta--said it has added 50 high profile artists, brands, celebrities, and lifestyle brands reaching over 75 million fans and followers. Names and details of those customers were not announced, but a number are via a relationship Fliptu has with talent agency ICM Partners. Fliptu's service helps brands manage their social networking activity, providing a central place for fans to access content about their favorite artists, celebrities, and others. Fliptu's founders are Jeremy Gocke and Doug Deluca, who is co-executive producer of Jimmy Kimmel Live. Fliptu's angel backers include Kelly Perdew, Sugarmaker Media, and others. JMI Equity, Apax Acquire Geosciences Software Firm For $1 Billion ---- San Diego-based JMI Equity has teamed with fellow private equity firm Apax Partners in the acquisition of Paradigm Ltd., worth $1 billion in cash, the firms involved with the transaction announced yesterday. Paradigm is a developer of oil and gas software, used in the geosciences and exploration business. Paradigm was previously owned by private equity firm Fox Paine and Company. The companies did not outline the respective ownership split between Apax and JMI Equity. Paradigm's geoscience software is used for the exploration, discovery, and extraction of natural gas, oil, and other subsurface resources. NuvoTV Gets $40M For Latino TV ---- Los Angeles-based NuvoTV, a new, English-language cable network aimed at Latinos in the U.S., said it has raised $40M in a venture financing round. The round came from Columbia Capital and Rho Capital Partners, and also included Veronis Suhler Stevenson and Tennenbaum Capital Partners. The firm said the funding will go towards its programming efforts, which target "bi-cultural" Latinos between the ages of 18 and 49. http://www.socaltech.com/intelligence/index.php?action=showdeal&id=44978 --------------------------------------------------------------------------- MARKETPLACE Reach 10000+ readers for 5 days for $250 Post your marketplace ad at: http://www.socaltech.com/postad.html ------------------------------ADVERTISEMENT------------------------------- Ventura Ventures Technology Center (V2TC) - Business Incubator The Ventura Ventures Technology Center (V2TC) is a high-tech business incubator located in downtown Ventura, CA.
