KidsRuby Teaches Kids Programming
----
How early is too early to teach your kids a programming language?
Never too early, apparently. A Los Angeles software developer has
created a Ruby-based programming software package--Kidsruby--which
allows children to learn how to develops software in the Ruby
programming language. The free software--which runs on Windows, Mac,
and Linux--provides a visual tool which lets kids learn all about
programming. The firm released an international version of its
software today, supporting not just English, but also Japanese,
French, and Spanish. The open source, free software was developed by
The Hybrid Group, located in Los Angeles; The Hybrid Group is also
behind project management tool Kanbanpad and project update software
Clutch.

Contour Energy Merges With ActaCell
----
Azusa-based advanced battery developer Contour Energy Systems has
merged with Austin-based ActaCell Energy Systems, the two said
Wednesday. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. The two
said the merger would help accelerate the companies' technology to
market.  ActaCell is venture backed by DFJ Mercury, Good Energies,
Applied Ventures and Google.org. Contour Energy Systems is backed by
In-Q-Tel, SBI Jeffires Asia, CMEA Capital, Harris & Harris,
Schlumberger and U.S. Venture Partners.

Schmoozd Opens Event Applications
----
In the quest to gain investor and community interest, one of the
hallmarks of how Los Angeles area startups approach networking with
the community is that they're more likely to demo and mix and mingle
at a nightclub or hip hangout, rather than sit through a stuffy,
formal daytime conference. One of those events, Schmoozd, said
Wednesday that it has begun accepting applications for its next event,
scheduled for October 25th in Santa Monica. The event--run by John
Diep--looks to highlight interesting startups in Los Angeles, in a hip
social setting. The event organizers said that applications to demo at
the event will be open until Sunday, October 14th.

Wellington Financial Closes $177.5M Venture Debt Fund
----
Wellington Financial, a provider of venture debt and growth capital to
high tech startups and other companies, said yesterday that it has
closed on a $177.5M, fourth fund. Wellington is based in Canada, but
has its U.S. offices in Santa Monica. The fund, Wellington Financial
Fund IV, came from Canadian institutional investors, pension plans and
family offices. The firm said it plans to open up a second, U.S>
office in Palo Alto later this year. The company said that 20 of its
last 25 investment were in U.S.-based, VC-backed companies.

Factual Rolls Product, UPC API
----
Santa Monica-based data startup Factual made a big expansion
Wednesday, saying that it has launched a new category of data called
Factual Global Products. The new data store contains information for
over 500,000 consumer packaged goods, all indexed via UPC and
full-text information. Factual said the new data area provides key
attributes on a product, including brand, product name, size,
category, UPC, and links to images. Factual's various APIs are being
heavily used in such areas as geolocation data and mobile apps; the
new area opens up a new area for the firm's service. Factual said that
NetPlenish and Grokr are both using the new API; NetPlenish is the
Ventura firm headed by Dave Compton, and Grokr is a stealth-mode firm
headed by former McAfee founder Srivats Sampath.

BUZZMEDIA Links With Suri's Burn Book
----
Los Angeles-based online celebrity media publisher BUZZMEDIA said
Wednesday that it has linked with Suri's Burn Book, an online Tumblr
blog focused on celebrity children and fashion mishaps. Financial
details of the joint venture were not disclosed. The blog was created
by blogger and author Allie Hagan, and logs more than 620,000 unique
visitors a month and 4.5 million monthly pageviews.

Mahalo President Rapp Leaves Firm
----
The President of Santa Monica-based Mahalo, Jason Rapp, has departed
the firm, according to a memo obtained by AllThingsD Wednesday.
According to the memo, Rapp is leaving "day-to-day operations" at the
company, but will remain as an advisor to the company's board. Mahalo
is the high profile startup headed by outspoken tech entrepreneur
Jason Calacanis; the company is now producing video-based iOS
applications. Mahalo is venture backed by Sequoia Capital and other
investors. Rapp did not say what he is doing next, only that it was an
"perfect time" to pursue a "new adventure."

Newegg Sets Marketing Chief
----
City of Industry-based Newegg, the electronics retailer, said
Wednesday that it has named Soren A. Mills as Chief Marketing Officer
at the company. Mills joins the firm from Guitar Center, where he in
charge of Musician's Friend, the company's online division. Mills also
has served at Wal-Mart Stores and Priceline.com. Newegg said Mills
will be repsonsible for all marketing initiatives at the company.
Newegg is a major, privately held electronics retailer, which has
quietly become one of the largest online retailers on the Internet.
The firm had sales of over $2.3 billion in 2010.

AT&T Dangles $30K To Developers At Hackathon
----
AT&T has decided to dangle a pretty hefty prize purse to local, Los
Angeles developers as part of its "It Can Wait" campaign to reduce
texting while driving. According to the carrier, it is inviting
developers to participate in a "It Can Wait" Hackathon being held at
Coloft in Santa Monica on Friday and Saturday. As part of the
hackathon, the firm is offering up $30,000 in prizes -- $20,000 to the
first prize, $7,000 for second place, and $3,000 for third place for
developers who create the best mobile apps to solve the
texting-while-driving problem. The Hackathon is being held from
Friday, September 7th until 9 p.m. Saturday, September 8th; the
company said it will announce winners on September 18th.

DreamHost Tackles Cloud Storage
----
Los Angeles-based web hosting provider DreamHost is tapping into Ceph,
the open source, scalable storage system project spun out of its own
operations, to launch its own object storage service. DreamHost said
its new DreamObjects service--aimed at both developers, as well as
individuals and businesses--will provide per-GB storage services at 7
cents per month, and 7 cents per GB for data transfer out. The new
cloud storage service is aimed at Amazon's S3 storage service and
Rackspace Cloud Files. According to DreamHost, the new service
provides fully compatible APIs which allows developers who originally
developed software for other cloud services, to access the service
without any changes to their code. Ceph is a massively scalable
storage system which was created by Dreamhost co-founder Sage Weil;
the open source software is now being maintained by Inktank, a startup
spun out of DreamHost. DreamHost said that its new DreamObject service
already is being used by such firms as ElephantDrive, the Los Angeles
cloud storage provider headed by Michael Fisher.

Sorenson Media Trumpets NFL Wins
----
San Diego-based video encoding and decoding software firm Sorenson
Media bragged yesterday that it is now powering the video encoding for
half of the NFL's 32 teams. The firm said that the teams are all using
Sorenson Squeeze, its video encoding software, for encoding online
video footage. Sorenson's products are used to encode video content
for streaming online and to mobile devices. The company did not say if
the wins came recently, or any details on those customer wins.
