StackSocial Revamps Service, Gets Mobile Friendly
----
StackSocial, the venture-backed startup focused on a service that ties
e-commerce with online publishers, said over the weekend that it has
"completely overhauled" its site, focused on mobile-ready access and
connections to social sites like Facebook. The startup--backed by 500
Startups, Siemer Ventures, EchoVC Partners, and  Amplify LA--is one of
the first firms out of Los Angeles-based accelerator Amplify.
StackSocial said "StackSocial 2.0" has been designed from the ground
up to work on iOS, tablets, smartphones, and other mobile devices,
using HTML5 and CSS3.

NationBuilder Ties With Candidate Check
----
Los Angeles-based NationBuilder, a startup developing an online set of
tools for political candidates, said over the weekend that it has tied
in with a tool which does a background check on candidates. The firm
said it has integrated Candidate Check, a service which allows
political candidates to show their own, "Candidate Trusted Seal"
showing they've been vetted by a third party source, including
information on employment history, military records, criminal
background, and more. Financial details of the link were not
disclosed. NationBuilder is backed by Andreessen Horowitz along with a
long list of angels; the founders of the firm is Jim Gilliam, formerly
CTO at Business.com.

Sorenson Media Launches New Product For Servers
----
San Diego-based Sorenson Media, the developer of video encoding and
decoding software headed by Peter Csathy, said late last night that it
has launched a new product, Sorenson Squeeze Premium. The new product
is a version of its standard Squeeze video encoding software
specifically aimed at running on windows Server 2008. The new software
retails at Squeeze Premium is $1,995, and includes a number of
features designed to help automate processes in its user interface.

Nirvanix Names VP of Worldwide Sales
----
San Diego-based cloud storage provider Nirvanix announced this morning
that it has hired Tina Gravel as its new Vice President of Worldwide
Sales. Gravel joins from Terremark, a provider of cloud computing
services, which was acquired by Verizon last year. Nirvanix said that
Gravel also has served at Data Return, SAS, Sybase and CSC. Gravel
will head up sales strategy and global expansion in emerging markets
and verticals such as healthcare, media & entertainment and financial
services. Nirvanix operates a cloud storage service which is focused
on the enterprise market.

Kurion Expands Board
----
Irvine-based Kurion, the venture backed provider of nuclear and
hazardous waste cleanup technology, said today that it has named two
new board members. Kurion said it had added D. Michael Steuert and
Fred Kittler to the board. Steuert was most recently Senior Vice
President and Chief Financial Officer of Fluor Industries, and also
has served at Litton Industries, GenCorp, and TRW. Kittler is at
venture investment firm Firelake Capital Management, one of the firm's
investors. Kurion develops a range of nuclear and hazardous waste
management technologies, and is currently applying its technology to
the cleanup of Fukushima.

Illumina Sets HR VP
----
San Diego-based Illumina appointed Paul Bianchi as its Senior Vice
President of Human Resources this morning. Bianchi joins from Risk
Management Solutions, and also had served at Strayer Consulting
Services, PeopleSoft, Hands-On Mobile, Ask Jeeves, ProBusiness
Services, NeXT Computer, and Apple. Illumina, which develops life
sciences tools and systems, said BIanchi is based in the San Francisco
Bay Area.

SheKnows Bumps Into Largest 50 Web Properties
----
Online women's publishing site SheKnows has bumped into the 50 largest
web properties in the U.S., the site said last week. Citing numbers
from th ecomScore July 2012 report, the Los Angeles-based site--which
is part of AtomicOnline--said it now has nearly 25 million readers.
SheKnows was ranked number 49 on the list; other local companies
ranked among the top 50 include Internet Brands (50), Demand Media
(16), BUZZMEDIA (38), Disney Online (30), Break Media (31), and
MySpace (44).

UsedCardboardBoxes Scores $250K From Chase
----
Adding to the ways that startups can help fund their ventures, a
local, Santa Monica firm, UsedCardboardBoxes.com--which has previously
raised funding from Funk Ventures and the Tech Coast Angels--has
scored $250,000 in a contest run by credit card issuer Chase and daily
deals provider LivingSocial. UsedCardboardBoxes.com received $250,000
in a grant as part of Mission: Small Business, a grant program aimed
at increasing awareness of small businesses, and helping them make a
positive impact on their community. UsedCardboardBoxes.com was one of
twelve companies receiving the grants, and were selected by a panel of
experts after an online social media voting campaign. The company was
one of 70,000 companies that applied for the award.
UsedCardboardBoxes.com takes used boxes from large US manufacturers,
and then resells those boxes to other companies and consumers.
