(More...) http://bit.ly/QTOi6m VIZIO Announces New PCs ---- Irvine-based VIZIO is continuing its expansion into the PC market today, saying that it has launched a new line up of Windows 8-based PCs. The firm said it is offering up a 24" and 27" all-in-one PC with a capacitive touchscreen display, plus new Ultrabook and Notebook models. The new VIZIO 14" and 15.6" Thin + Light, and 15.6" Notebook also feature Windows 8 and touchscreen capability. The various Thin + Light machines start at $849, and the PCs start at $998. VIZIO--better known for its flat panel, HDTVs--expanded into personal computers in June. Emulex Expands In China ---- Costa Mesa-based storage area networking hardware developer Emulex is in an expansion in China, the firm said this morning, and has established a new company called Emulex (Beijing) Networking Technology Co. Ltd.. Emulex said the new subsidiary has opened up a new office in Beijing, China. Emulex said it is working with such companies as Huawei, Inspur, Lenovo, PowerLeader, Sugon and Zhongxing Telecommunication Equipment (ZTE) in the Chinese market, and plans to double its investment in the region over the next five years. The new subsidiary also has an office in Shanghai. CurveNorth Acquired By TransFirst ---- Orange County-based merchant processing software developer CurveNorth has been acquired by a New York firm, TransFirst, TransFirst said Wednesday. CurveNorth, which was based in the small town of Silverado, developed software used for the merchant processing industry, handling workflow and signups for merchant accounts. Financial terms of the asset acquisition were not announced. The firms said that CurveNOrth's employees are joining TransFirst, and will move into TransFirst's Cypress, CAlifornia facility. Shopatron Wins Women's Retailer ---- San Luis Obispo-based e-commerce software developer Shopatron has signed up women's specialty retailer Intermix as a customer, the company said Wednesday. Financial impact of the win were not announced. Intermix is using Shopatron's distributed order management system, to fulfill online e-commerce order from inventory from both distribution centers and retail stores. Shopatron's e-commerce software is specifically designed for retailers, allowing orders to be fulfilled not from a central warehouse but distributed to either local stores or even local channel representatives. KYTHERA Biopharmaceuticals Prices IPO ---- Calabasas-based KYTHERA Biopharmaceuticals, a developer of aesthetic medicine products aimed at reducing fat deposits, has priced its IPO at $16.00 per share. The firm is offering 4,400,000 shares of its common stock on the NASDAQ Global Select Market as KYTH. The firm priced at the high end of its estimated initial public offering range, which was between $14.00 and $16.00 per share. KYTHERA is venture backed by Versant Ventures, ARCH Ventures, Prospect Venture Partners, JAFCO, Fidelity, among others. WD Launches Wi-Fi Range Extender ---- Irvine-based WD said today that it has launched a new product--a wireless range extender aimed at extending the range of Wi-Fi networks. The firm said its new product, the My Net Wi-Fi Range Extender, helps boost weak Wi-Fi signals within a home. The firm said the new device has an MSRP of $89.99, and is available from select U.S. retailers and directly from WD. The new device is part of WD's expansion into wireless home networking products; the firm had earlier launched a family of HD dual-band routers. Google's PageSpeed Exits Beta ---- Google announced Wednesday that it has released its mod_pagespeed project--which automatically optimizes and speeds up web pages accesses for website owners using Apache--out of beta. The move allows customers of such companies as Los Angeles-based Dreamhost and Los Angeles content delivery network provider Edgecast--two of the launch partners of Google's PageSpeed--to automatically see speed increases in the retrieval of their web pages by users. Google's Pagespeed module does all that is required to optimize pages for website operators; Dreamhost, Edgecast, as well as GoDaddy, have been the first Internet service providers to adopt the Google software. CityGrid Slashes Staff ---- In the latest cuts among Silicon Beach's high tech community, CityGrid, which runs Citysearch, Insider Pages, and Urbanspoon--has laid off a chunk of its staff, including a significant number of Los Angeles employees. Initial news of the cuts, which were made in the last couple of days, came through recruiters and others close to the company. Citygrid did not respond to emails for comment yesterday from socalTECH, however, TechCrunch is placing the size of the cuts at 15 percent of the company. The cuts come on the heels of cuts at BeachMint, ShoeDazzle, and Cooking.com. It's unclear why there's been such a recent increase in layoffs in the area, which over the last year or two has been booming, with companies struggling to find staff among an upsurge in startups and technology growth. Three Southern California Firms Get EETimes Focus ---- Semiconductor and electronics industry publication EETimes has identified three of Southern California's semiconductor startups among its annual list of sixty startups to watch in the industry. The magazine, in its list of startups worth watching, identified Efficient Power Conversion Corp. in El Segundo; RFaxis in Irvine; and Transphorm in Goleta as companies in its list, which was based on evaluating technology, market, maturity, financial position, investors, and leadership. (More...) http://bit.ly/Rg3d8h Contur Getting Set To Beta Automatic Email Organizer ---- Los Angeles-based Contur, the email organization software developer recently launched out of StartEngine, told its users that it's getting set to release its automatic email organizer. The firm said that its software is now able to sort emails automatically into inboxes 80 percent of the time, and is getting set for a closed beta of the new service. The company's software is aimed at helping users organize their emails by task, projects, and more. Latest New World Ventures Firm On IPO Track ---- IO Data Centers, The newest portfolio company of New World Ventures, the venture investment arm of The Pritzker Group--which has been one of the most active local investors in Los Angeles in recent months--is already on track to an IPO, according to a report. FORTUNE said that IO Data Centers, which recently raised $90M (with $50M from New World Ventures) is hoping to be listed publicly by 2013, according to IO's CEO. The investment in IO is apparently the largest, ever investment by New World Ventures in a company. http://finance.fortune.cnn.com/2012/10/10/io-data-raises-90-million-eyes-ipo SpaceX Dragon Docks Successfully With ISS ---- Hawthorne-based SpaceX has had another big milestone today, after NASA reported that the SpaceX Dragon cargo craft successfully docked with the International Space Station Wednesday morning at 9:03 a.m. EDT. SpaceX launched its first, cargo carrying mission to the ISS Sunday evening. According to NASA, the SpaceX Dragon was captured by Expdition 33 Commander Suni Willians by the station's robotic arm, with the capsule securely bolted to the station. The hatch to the Dragon is scheduled to be opened tomorrow. The mission is the first in a series of cargo delivery missions contracted to SpaceX, which earlier this year proved it was able to reliably launch its rockets and dock with the ISS.
