ThisNext's Glossi Launches Public Beta
----
Glossi, an online magazine publishing tool being developed by Santa
Monica-based ThisNext, has its debut today, aimed at letting users
built and publish their own visual magazines. The new service lets
users organize and lay out heavily visual, online magazines. The new
magazines includes content from Lucky Magazine, Liv Magazine,
BeachMint, as well as individuals.

Younity Launches Mobile Storage Service Into Beta
----
Do you wish you could share all of your music, videos, photos, and
other files across your iPad, iPhone, laptop, and desktop? A new
service, Younity, launched this morning to do just that. The startup,
which is launching out of the MuckerLab accelerator, said its service
lets users have a single file system across all of their devices,
providing free access across iOS devices, Mac OS X, and Windows, with
Linux and Android support coming soon. The service comes out of
Entangled Media, which is headed by Erik Caso. The startup said the
service will be available without costly storage fees and storage
limitations, but did not release any details on what the cost of
storage ultimately will be.

Websense Debuts New Cloud-based Security Tool
----
San Diego-based Websense, the developer of cyber security tools, said
today that it has debuted a new, cloud-based cybersecurity product
called ACE in the Cloud. The firm said the new tool provides
cloud-based security, providing real-time threat analysis and
security, and integrates with traditional proxy gateways and
firewalls. Websense said the cloud-based tool checks for web page
content, active scripts, exploit code, obfuscated commands, web
redirects, files, PDFs and executables. Pricing on the new product was
not announced.

Warner Launches Multiplayer Game
----
Burbank-based Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment announced today
that it has launched a new multiplayer online battle game, Guardians
of Middle-earth, in conjunction with film The Hobbit: An Unexpected
Journey. The firm said the game runs on Xbox LIVE Arcade for the Xbox
360, and lets user pit teams of characters from The Hobbit and the
Lord of the Rings films against each other in multiplayer battle.
Warner said it developed the title at Monolith Products, a game studio
it runs in Kirkland, Washington.

Broadcom Aims Designs At 3G Smartphones
----
Irvine-based Broadcom said this morning that it has released a
portfolio of turnkey designs, aimed at developing 3G smartphones. The
new designs include single-, dual-, and new quad-core platforms tied
to cellular baseband, RFIC, and PMUs. The new designs are designed to
allow OEMs to create new entry level smartphones, and include designs
specifically aimed at creating Android phones, and optimized for
Android 4.2 Jelly Bean. Broadcom said the platforms are sampling to
its early access partners, and that it should be in volume production
in December.

PeriOptix Acquired By DenMat
----
Escondido-based PeriOptix, a provider of magnification and
illumination devices for the dental and medical industry, has been
acquired by Santa Maria-based DenMat, the firms said today. Financial
terms of the buy were not disclosed. PeriOptix develops illuminated
loups, headlights, and other products used in the medical industry.

Qualcomm, Sharp In Joint Development Deal
----
San Diego-based Qualcomm has inked a deal with Japanese display maker
Sharp, to invest approximately $61M (5 billion yen) in Sharp, as part
of a joint development deal. The deal, first reported by Japanese
newspaper Nikkei, said that the two will work together to develop an
energy-efficient, LCD panel for smartphones. Sharp has been looking
around for strategic partners in the last month, as it has run into
series business troubles. Reports says the move gives Qualcomm 5
percent of Sharp.

LA Makerspace Targets Tinkerers, Creators
----
How do you spur more people creating software, hardware, devices, and
more in Los Angeles? A new group, LA Makerspace, headed by Tara Tiger
Brown, is hoping to create a new, non-profit community space all
around creating new things. The group recently kicked off a
Kickstarter effort to raise money to buy 3D printers, a laser cutter,
and more for use at a space in the LA Mart, which it says will be used
to teach classes and support projects in software, hardware,
electronics, robotics, art, filmmaking, citizen science, bio-tech,
eco-tech, wearable-tech, and more.  The group says it has already
hosted "hackathons" for kids learning to program, and is also seeking
entrepreneurs, software engineers, hardware engineers, scientists,
artists, filmmakers, and others to help it in its effort.

Qualcomm Backs Telephony API Provider
----
San Diego-based Qualcomm has backed San Francisco-based Plivo, a
provider of voice and messaging applications APIs. Plivo said Monday
morning that it has raised $1.75M in a seed funding round, which came
from  Andreessen Horowitz, Battery Ventures, Qualcomm Incorporated and
SV Angel. Plivo provides voice and messaging APIs, used by developers
to develop telephony, SMS, and other applications. The firm competes
with such companies as Twilio, CallFire, Tropo, and others.

AeroVironment Invests In Swedish Firm
----
Monrovia, California-based Aerovironment, the developer of unmanned
aircraft systems, said Monday that it is making an investment in a
Swedish developer of vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) systems.
Aerovironment said it will invest up to $3M in CybAero AB, which
develops unmanned aircraft systems with vertical takeoff and landing
capability. The move comes as part of an effort to provide VTOL
unmanned aircraft systems to Aerovironment's customers. Aerovironment
said it gained the right to develop and distribute VTOL aircraft based
on CybAero's technology, to customers in the United States and to
government customers in NATO and other countries.
