Empowering Music Teachers With TakeLessons' Online Marketplace

One of the biggest areas where the Internet has been shaping our
everyday life, is how it has begun to empower people to earn money and
a living in brand new ways. There are now a large number of online,
peer-to-peer marketplaces which all aim at one thing; helping
connecting people with others, so that they can offer their services
or goods (a room for rent, a ride, a vacation timeshare, a dog sitter,
etc.) to others, in a highly efficient way. One of the companies which
has been helping to power that revolution is TakeLessons
(www.takelessons.com), a San Diego company which helps music teachers
find students, both for in-person lessons as well as for online
teaching sessions. We caught up with Steven Cox, the company's CEO, to
learn more about the company.

What is TakeLessons?

Steven Cox: We are a marketplace that helps service providers make a

Predixion Software Updates Platform
----
San Juan Capistrano-based Predixion Software, the developer of
predictive analytics software headed by Simon Arkell, said Wednesday
that it has updated its platform. According to the firm, the new
version of its software now allows users to create applications inside
Microsoft Excel and supports a much wider range of external data
sources, among other updates. Predixion's products are aimed at making
business intelligence and analytics more available to users, allowing
non-technical users to create their own data visualization. The firm
is one of the companies to come out of Frost Venture Partners, the big
data startup incubator headed by Stuart Frost.

Broadcom Wins India's Karbonn Mobiles
----
Irvine-based chipmaker Broadcom reported a win this morning with
Indian mobile phone brand Karbonn Mobiles, which it says will use its
Android 4.0 platform for a new smartphone. Broadcom said that Karbonn
Mobile will use its Android 4.0 platform for its A12 smartphone, which
will include a 1GHZ processor, multimedia, 3G/2G dual-SIM dual
standby, and more. Shipment volumes and financial impact of the win
were not announced. Broadcom said the new phone is powered by its
BCM21654G chipset. Karbonn's new phone is already shipping in India.

Local Corporation Gets $5M In PIPE
----
Irvine-based Local Corporation, the operator of the network of online,
local directory websites, said today that it is in an agreement to
raise $5M from  The Tail Wind Fund Ltd. The firm said the funding will
come in the form of convertible subordinated notes and warrants to
purchase common stock. Local Corporation said the new funds go towards
general working capital.

DriveCam Wins Florida Cab Company
----
San Diego-based DriveCam, the developer of driver monitoring systems,
reported a win this morning in Florida. The firm said that B&L Yellow
Cab of Broward County, Florida, will roll out its solutions to its
fleet of 600 vehicles. Financial details of the win were not
disclosed. DriveCam develops video-based driving monitoring systems
used to monitor driving fleets.

LifeProof Names EMEA Director
----
San Diego-based smartphone and tablet case maker LifeProof announced
today that it has appointed Stephen Daverio as its Managing Director
of Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA). Daverio was most
recently at Disruptive Group Limited, a maker of iPod accessories, and
also has served at SanDisk and Logitech. LifeProof said Daverio will
play a key role in expanding its presence and market share in the
EMEA.

Xpenser Acquired By Coupa Software
----
San Diego-based Xpenser, a startup developing a cloud-based service to
help prepare and submit expense reports for its users, has been
acquired. According to Coupa Software, it will use the buy to expand
its domain expertise and leadership in the area of expense management.
Xpenser was founded and was headed by Parand Tony Darugar, who has
become General Manager, Expenses, at Coupa. The firm was founded in
2008. The firm was one of the companies which had been part of the
EvoNexus incubator. Financial details of the buy were not disclosed.
Coupa Software is a provider of cloud-based, spending optimization
software headquartered in San Francisco.

Boingo Goes Live At Dallas Love Field
----
Boingo Wireless, the operator of the global Wi-Fi hotspot network,
said Wednesday that it has gone live at Dallas Love Field, the latest

Burner Brings Disposable Phone Numbers To Android

Ever wish you could easily create one-off, disposable phone numbers?
Los Angeles-based Ad Hoc Labs has had that handled with Burner, a
handy iPhone app which lets users create phone numbers on the fly.

Miramar, Okapi Back Healthcare Software Developer
----
Two, Orange County venture capital investors are behind a developer of
socially-driven, healthcare software aimed at helping health plans
encourage healthy activity by their members. Welltok said Wednesday
that it has raised $18.7M in a Series B funding round, which came from
Emergence Capital Partners, InterWest Partners and New Enterprise
Associates (NEA), along with existing investors Miramar Venture
Partners, Okapi Venture Capital and TriZetto Corporation. WellTok is
based in Denver, Colorado. Jeff Margolis, CEO of WellTok, founded
TriZetto in Orange County, although the firm subsequently moved to
Denver.
