On Ramp Wireless: Connecting The Smart Grid

In the world of mobile app and Internet startups, it's not that often
that you see companies who touch the hardware side of the world get
funding nowadays. One of the companies that has recently is On Ramp
Wireless (www.onrampwireless.com), a San Diego company in the M2M
market headed by Kevin Hell. The firm recently raised a $15M series C
funding, and we caught up with Kevin to learn more about why its
customers, and investors, are interested in its technology.

ZestFinance Raises $20M
----
Los Angeles-based ZestFinance, a developer of "big data" based
software tools for credit scoring and underwriting, has raised $20M in
a financing round, led by Peter Thiel. The round also includes
Lightspeed Venture Partners, Matrix Partners, Kensington Capital
Holdings, and Eastward Capital Partners. As part of the funding, Thiel
Capital, Peter Thiel's investment firm, will gain a board observer
seat. ZestFinance was founded by former Google Chief Information
Officer Doug Merrill along with former Capital Hone executive Shawn
Budde. ZestFinance had previously been known as ZestCash, and had been
looking to offer up short term loans to consumers; the company has
since refocused instead of providing credit scoring tools to financial
institutions.

Trius Therapeutics Acquired By Cubist Pharmaceuticals
----
San Diego-based Trius Therapeutics is in a deal to be acquired for
approximately $707M by Cubist Pharmaceuticals, a fellow
biopharmaceuticals firm, the companies said Tuesday. According to the
two, Cubist will acquired Trius for $13.50 per share in cash, plus
earnout which could bring the transaction to $818M. Cubist said the
deal would add a late-stage antibiotic candidate, tedizolid phosphate
(TR-701), to its portfolio, along with several pre-clinical antibiotic
programs. Trius is being advised by Citi and Centerview Partners LLC,
along with Cooley LLP. Cubist is being advised by Barclays and Ropes &
Gray LLP.

Zadara Storage Raises $3M From Toshiba
----
Irvine-based Zadara Storage, which develops cloud connected, block and
file-based storage devices for the enterprise, has raised $3M in a
funding round, the company said today. Zadara said the funding came
from Toshiba America Electronics Components. Zadara Storage said the
funding will go towards sales, support, and engineering.

WebMetro Acquired By TeleTech
----
San Dimas-based WebMetro, a search marketing and digital marketing
agency, has been acquired by TeleTech Holdings, the two said today.
Financial terms of the buy were not disclosed. According to the
companies, WebMetro will become part of TeleTech's Customer Growth
Services division, Revana. TeleTech is a large provier of customer
service outsourcing to companies. The two said they expect the deal to
be complete in August. According to both companies, WebMetro founder
Carlos Ugalde will continue to lead the business.

Trovagene Raises $15M In PIPE
----
San Diego-based molecular diagnostics developer Trovagene announced
this morning that it has raised $15M in a registered direct offering
of its common stock. The publicly held company, which trades on the
NASDAQ as TROV, said the shares were sold directly to an un-named
institutional investor. The company said the new funding will go
towards research and development activities and for working capital
and other general corporate purposes.

SpaceX Wins Canadian Launch Program
----
Hawthorne-based commercial space rocket developer Space Exploratoin
Technologies said Tuesday afternoon that it has been awarded a launch
reservation contract to support the Canadian space program. SpaceX
said the company will carry three satellites to orbit on a Falcon 9
rocket in 2018, via a contract with MacDonald, Dettwiler and
Associates Ltd. (MDA) . Financial details of the contract win were not
announced. The satellites will go towards Canada's needs in the area
of maritime surveillance, disaster management and ecosystem
monitoring. SpaceX said that MDA already has a mission signed this
year for delivery a satellite on the Falcon 9. SpaceX is led by
technology mogul Elon Musk.

Pong.com Takes On Casual Games Sharing
----
Santa Monica-based Pong.com said Tuesday that it has launched a new
website aimed at becoming a "Pinterest for Flash Games". The company's
website features Pinterest-like links to different online casual
games, and lets users "repong" the games they like, comment on games,
and more. The website said it lets users organize and share their
favorite flash games through the service, and also features user
member profiles and other social features.

Bottlenose Lands $3.6M For Social Media Analytics
----
Bottlenose, a brand new startup in social media analytics, has raised
$3.6M in a Series A funding round. The company said the funding round
was led by ff Venture Capital, and also included Lerer Ventures,
Transmedia, Advancit, as well as other leading funds and angel
investors. Bottlenose said that its software is helping brands and
agencies, including Pepsi, FleishmanHillard, Razorfish, and
DigitasLBi, to map and track trends in social networks. Bottlenose is
headed by Nova Spivack. The firm is based in Los Angeles, New York
City, and Amsterdam, the Netherlands.

Boingo Wireless Signs Wildcats
----
Los Angeles-based Wi-fi and communications provider Boingo Wireless
reported yesterday that it has been selected by the University of
Arizona, to design, build and manage a distributed antenna system on
campus. Boingo said the antenna system is being used to create a
campus-wide, cellular network, covering the 56,000-seat Arizona
Stadium, including all fan areas and the Steward Observatory Mirror
Laboratory, as well as the nearby student residence halls. Boingo
Wireless said that the network will be built at no cost to the
university. Boingo operates similar neutral host distributed antenna
systems in a number of U.S. airports, including O'Hare and Midway,
JFK, LaGuardia, and Newark, and also says it has deployed systems at
major league sports stadiums, mass transit hubs and other
universities.

Sapphire Energy Pays Off Government Loans
----
In what might be one of the first successful examples of an energy
startup company making effective use of taxpayer guarantees, San
Diego-based Sapphire Energy, which is developing algae-based crude oil
technology, said it has completely paid of a loan guarantee from the
